Banana Boat Kids Mineral Lotion SPF 50+ review

Quick Summary:

Date Tested: 07/15/2022

**This formulation is identical to the Banana Boat Sport Mineral High Endurance vs Sweat SPF 50 sunscreen lotion**

I have to admit, writing sunscreen reviews can be a bit tedious. How many ways can one describe a product which is generally the same across many different brands, but just with different different sun protection abilities? Let me tell you, it gets hard to come up with stuff to talk about.

Ok, enough complaining about writing the next great literary masterpiece…lets get to the nitty gritty. The Banana Boat brand has been around as long as I’ve been alive (apparently the brand started around 1976), and its branding has been pretty whatevs (as much as I can remember). When I think about the Banana Boat brand line of sunscreen products I immediately think of kids doing any outdoor water activity, whether at a lake, beach, or pond. So maybe their marketing department really is working overtime and doing what they set out to do?

The brand doesn’t really inspire me to believe the company is cutting edge and in tune with the latest and greatest in consumer care, nor does it give me reason to believe the brand is that concerned about the environment or latest health care concerns. Does this mean that the company is not? No. But when choosing sunscreen to purchase in this day and age, a lot of how we do so is based on the lifestyle ethos we want to live by. My judgement concerning Banana Boats marketing aside, I do find the products to be very strong performers at blocking ultraviolet light, and that is what really matters to me.

The Banana Boat Kids Mineral SPF50+ Lotion reduced UVI by 97.91%, UVA by 98.08%, and UVB by 94.99% – A very strong performer for a mineral/physical active ingredient only sunscreen. Consistency was good for an active sunscreen lotion as well.

  • Viscosity is Good, albeit slightly less viscous than I expected for an active sunscreen.

Prepared slide ready for testing

The Banana Boat Kids lotion spread very well. Had a nice consistency and even dispersion (especially for a physical only sunscreen!). The viscosity was slightly less thick than I would have liked, but it didn’t seem to effect the testing results in any way.

Below are the results from 2 hours of testing in my UV testing station.

Kids Mineral SPF 50 UV blocking test results

Testing notes:

I have come to regard Banana Boat products as very strong performers for the price/value. They may not have the slickest marketing catered to the eco/health conscious Instagram Millennial or Tik Tok fanperson, but the products work very well. I really wouldn’t hesitate to use a banana boat product if it was available to me as I know the name and product line seem to always achieve a high level of ultraviolet protection (from the few that I have already tested).

Being that the pricing for these sunscreen products are also very affordable, I do recommend them.
