BabyGanics SPF50 Mineral-based sunscreen spray

Quick Summary:

Date Tested: 04/05/2022

In this review, I test the babyganics 50+ SPF mineral-based tear free sunscreen spray. It is a broad spectrum SPF 50+ with UVA + UVB protection. It states it is tear free, non-allergenic, and water resistant up to 80 minutes. It contains no PABA, phthalates, parabens, fragrances, or nano-particles.

It is a hybrid sunscreen which utilizes both chemical and physical blockers, Octinoxate 7.5%, Octisalate 5%, and Zinc oxide 11.2%. Maybe because the formulation is meant to be used for babies, there may have been a trade-off with designing for potency vs reactivity of the sunscreen ingredients on the skin. The babyganics sunscreen only reduced the UVI by 50.53%, reduced UVA by 50.66%, and reduced UVB intensity by 45.59%. I even opened the bottle up and scooped the sunscreen directly from the bottle, to rule out the delivery issues (being a spray). No dice. This sunscreen is pretty weak at blocking harmful UV rays.

The babyganics sunscreen characteristics at a glance:

  • Broad spectrum SPF 50+
  • Organic and inorganic (hybrid) sunscreen classification
  • Broad Spectrum UVA/UVB protection
  • Formula is PABA, phthalates, parabens, fragrances, or nano-particles free
  • Viscosity is typical for spray, but a little watery and somewhat clumpy?

Prepared slide ready for testing

The babyganics SPF 50+ has a watery consistency and is sort of clumpy. I suppose being a spray it needs to be less viscous. As you can see from the prepped slide, its coverage is pretty inconsistent.

Below are the results from 2 hours of testing in my UV testing station.

Babyganics UV blocking test results

Sunscreen Testing Results. The blocking ability for UVA, UVB, and UVI are shown above as percentages.

Ultraviolet light quick reference:

UVA: The Ultraviolet wavelength from 315nm – 400nm. The “Aging UV light” – Causes wrinkles.
UVB: The Ultraviolet wavelength from 280nm – 315nm. The “Bad UV light” – Causes skin cancer.
UVI: The global sun UV index. The more a sunscreen can reduce the level of UVI, the better.

Testing notes:

This particular broad spectrum sunscreen meant for babies (I assume they are marketing towards baby use since the name implies as such), is something I wouldn’t recommend. The viscosity is watery (because spray delivery), clumping of the sunscreen is visually observed (not very well distributed through the liquid medium) when opening the bottle, and the blocking ability (probably due to the first two reasons) is pretty weak. There really are so many other products out on the market I would much rather use.

I don’t recommend this product. Not for a baby anyways.

*While perusing their site, it looks like they have a new formulation (which is a physical based sunscreen only) which may fix the issues present in the formulation I have tested. As such, ill need to get a hold of that version and see if it works any better.

Rating: 1 out of 5.

Bad performer which only blocks about 50% UVA, and only 45% UVB. If you want a product which only provides 50% protection, you’re better off getting something else.
